The authors, agents, editors, publishers and songwriters who attend this conference, teaching workshops, participating in discussions or reviewing manuscripts, all do so as volunteers. Many of them had never heard of mitochondrial disease before this conference, many of them had never met me; none of them knew Sam and Zachary. Still they come, giving of themselves, of their time and their talent, in an effort to help raise awareness about mitochondrial disease as well as money for the research that will one day lead to a cure. In the past three years, "Writers at the Beach: Pure Sea Glass" has donated $35,000 to the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation because of these generous people.
